Principal’s Message – November 2018
Greetings. As we enter our 14 th week of school, we have much for which to be thankful for. We are
incredibly proud of our students and teachers for their continued growth on the CA Assessment of Student
Performance and Progress. Let’s celebrate together their efforts and drive. Our school continues its work in
establishing and sustaining research- based practices that support our student’s creativity and lifelong
love of learning.
Professional Development and University Partnerships – This year we are excited to begin our
work with the UCLA Math Project (UCLAMP) and LAUSD’s Division of Instruction (DOI) as Cognitively
Guided Instruction (CGI) is adopted as a school wide practice for the teaching and learning of
mathematics across the district. 120 schools are now working with the district through the support of
UCLAMP, the DOI, and our school. Two of our teachers are supporting 2 schools on 8 Tuesdays; and in
January, we will be hosting educators, so they can see the work in action. We are also very excited for
our partnership this year with the The Music Center. Our teachers will receive support for 7 Tuesdays to
deepen their understanding around the Visual Arts Standards and strategies/lessons to integrate visual
arts into the core subjects in the classroom. We will also continue our work with Powerful Choices, our
balanced literacy experts, as we refine and grow our practice in balanced literacy, readers’ and writers’
workshop. The sacrifice of time our teachers make each and every day goes beyond the walls of our
school, and we have established a vibrant learning community not only for students but also for other
educators. I am committed to being the kind of present and engaged principal that has been one of the
reasons you love our school, but I always remember that our teachers are the main attraction. We are
indebted to them.
Attendance – Our goal is for 71% or more of our students to be in attendance 96% of the time. Our
school-wide attendance rate is 80%, so let’s keep that percentage aiming high! An attendance rate of
96% is no more than 7 absences in a year. We are pleased that all of our grade groups are on track to
meet that goal, which we hope to maintain through the engaging work in our classrooms and our
incentives. Attendance is such a critical factor in our students’ success. Thank you for supporting us in
Thanks to all of our families who have donated to our Fall Pledge Drive as we work toward our first goal
of $150,000. Let’s make this a banner year! Thanks for all that you do to support Micheltorena St.
Principal’s Message – June 2018
Dear Micheltorena Street Elementary Learning Community,
Thank you for another wonderful and productive school year. I can’t thank everyone enough for your endless hours of volunteering, chaperoning, reading, organizing, donating and doing whatever was necessary to support students—both at home and at
school. Special thanks to the Friends of Micheltorena who, as usual, went above and beyond the call of duty to provide whatever was necessary to add to our students’ already rich school experience.
That experience could not occur without the endless energy, skills and devotion of the Micheltorena Street Elementary staff. Thanks and well done to an incredible group of professionals.
A final word to Micheltorena Street students: Thank you for all your hard work throughout the school year. I am so honored to be your principal; you make me proud to be a Micheltorena Street Eagle. You keep me laughing and young at heart. I am grateful for your joy, astute insights and amazing talents. Best wishes to our graduating fifth graders, whom I will miss greatly—please come back and visit.
Over the summer vacation I will be working with colleagues and staff to put into place a smooth opening to the new academic year and setting the priorities to build upon the successes of the school so that we can improve still further. We should always seek to do better; to challenge ourselves and our students to set the highest standards and achieve our ambitious goals.
I would like to wish you all the very best for the summer vacation and look forward to welcoming you all back, refreshed, for what will be an exciting, new academic year.
Until next school year, here’s wishing you love, laughter and learning.
