Micheltorena 6th Graders take second place prize in solar video contest!

Congratulations to Ms. Vargas’ 6th grade class for taking the second place prize (and $750!) in Environment California’s first-ever “Sunlight. Camera. Action” video contest, where contestants submitted two-minute videos to make the case for Los Angeles to become a world-class solar leader. See their video below! A school-wide assembly was held on Friday, November 2 at 1:30pm in the auditorium where the class was presented with its prize from Environment California. Great job, 6th graders!!
Second Annual Great Pumpkin Fest was awesome!

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate at the Second Annual Great Pumpkin Festival last Saturday. It was a lot of fun, with a super lineup of local bands, delicious food, games, garden tours and a haunted house. The Micheltorena PTA raised over $3000 to support school field trips and other activities! Dozens of parents came out to volunteer their help, and a big thanks goes out to teachers Mr. Moreno, Mr. Hummer, Mr. Carrillo, Ms. Williams and Community Rep Peter Valverde who came in to volunteer on their day off to make the day a great success.

Reading Eagles in the Library every Monday and Wednesday

Health, Fitness and Nutrition Classes

Every Thursday in October 2012 and November 2012 Dr. Raymundo Berdugo will be covering health topics pertinent to 4th graders’ understanding. California state standards are addressed in class. These classes are held in the school auditorium and are immediately made more relevant by having a medical professional disseminate the information. Children are not only ‘glued’ to what Dr. Berdugo teaches but enjoy getting their questions answered and clarified.
Great Pumpkin Festival, Saturday October 27, 11a – 5p!!

The Micheltorena PTA cordially invites everyone to join us, October 27th from 11am to 5pm, at our second annual Great Pumpkin Festival!
The festival will feature live music (see below, or click here), a haunted house, food, games, bake sale, crafts and more!
$1 gets you admission to the festival. Kids under 2 years of age are free. Festival proceeds will go towards funding school field trips and after-school classes. Hope to see you and your family there!!
6th graders in final competition for solar energy video contest!

Congratulations to Ms. Vargas’ 6th grade class, whose GO SOLAR! video has made it to the finals in the Environment California’s LA Solar Video Contest! But the contest is not over. Online voting has started and will be open until October 16th. The class is trying to gather as many votes as they can before voting closes. The winning entry gets $1500, which the class plans to use to fund a kayaking trip on the LA River!
You may already know that Los Angeles enjoys 329 sunny days a year, yet less than 2 percent of the city’s electricity comes from rooftop solar. It is estimated that our school could save up to $50,000 a year in electricity costs by converting to solar energy. The winning submissions will be shown to Los Angeles city leaders to make the case for putting the sun to work for Los Angeles. Spread the word and vote today! School Beautification Day, Saturday, September 29 10a – 2pm

Come join us for our Fall Beautification Day! From 10am to 2pm, we will be painting the Golden Gate mural, playground equipment, and cleaning and greening the school gardens.
Bring a pair of work gloves, a hat, and sunblock for the day. Lunch will be provided. Thanks to Cafe Tropical, Beverly Bagels, Garage Pizza and Starbuck’s for donating food for our volunteers!

WELCOME BACK, EVERYONE!! We are officially off and running. Here is a quick rundown of events for the first week of September.
September 4, Tuesday, 8:15am: PTA Association Meeting in the Parent Center. Our PTA membership drive kicks off today! Please join and support our PTA, membership is $7 for the year. All are welcome to attend our first meeting.
September 5, Wednesday, 7:20am: Reading Eagles Parent Training in the School Library. Reading Eagles is a parent-supervised reading program in the library during the hour before school. Parents lead reading groups and supervise student mentors! Come out and help our eagles SOAR through READING!
September 6, Thursday, 5pm: BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT! Come meet your fellow Micheltorena parents, and see your child’s classroom! Don’t forget to purchase your Subway sandwich ticket from the school office. $4.50 for one sandwich, drink and cookie or chips. We will be conducting a school t-shirt pre-sale as well.
September 7, Friday, 8:15am: Coffee with the Principal! Come have coffee and a snack and hear the news from Principal Furfari.
