FRIENDS OF MICHELTORENA IS HERE TO HELP
Friends of Micheltorena (FOM) is the volunteer, non-profit fundraising entity for Micheltorena Elementary School. FOM is comprised of parents, teachers and members of the local community. Ideally, every family is a member of FOM and gets involved!
WHY DO WE NEED FOM?
Budget cuts! Because of recent budget cuts, our school is not able to offer as many programs and resources as we’d like. In the past eight years, our Supplemental Funds have gone down 80% – from $481,000 to $100,000. These funds are meant to cover basic expenses. Our school wants more than that. That’s where FOM comes in. Without FOM, Micheltorena wouldn’t have all the great features that make our school special.
WHAT FOM SUPPORTS
Because of FOM’s fundraising and volunteer efforts, our students can have:
- enhanced arts programs (music/orchestra, visual, theater, dance)
- enhanced PE program (partnering with YMCA) and new equipment
- after school enrichment classes
- bus rides to go on field trips
- a “Wonder of Reading” Library with new library books
- a Community Garden
- a California Native Plant & Butterfly Garden
- additional computers in the computer lab
- a School Psychologist one extra day per week
- Teacher Assistants (Kindergarten)
- educational materials and books for the Dual Language Program
- a playground set in the lower yard
- campus beautification (murals, Peace Path, greening, trees, labyrinth, etc!)
- community events (Kindergarten Orientation Social, Movie Nights, Pumpkin Festival
and Dia de la Familia)
However, all of these things cost money! Which means we need your help.
HOW FOM RAISES MONEY
Each year, FOM hosts a number of events to raise money for the school, including: Fall Pledge Drive, March-a-Thon, and our Spring Auction. We have also successfully raised money through grants. (For example, we now have a new California Native Plant & Butterfly Garden, thanks to the parents who wrote three grants to fund it.) WHO DECIDES HOW MONEY IS SPENT?
YOU do! Every parent at Micheltorena is automatically a member of FOM, which means you can come to any meeting and vote. FOM meetings are listed on the school calendar. Membership is free and open. Be part of the decision making process by coming to meetings, joining the discussion, and voting. DOES FOM’S FUNDRAISING JEOPARDIZE THE SCHOOL’S TITLE 1 STATUS?
Absolutely not. FOM helps augment funds now missing from our school’s State and Federal budgets. FOM’s efforts are independent of those monies and serve to make up for funds that are lacking. Without FOM or funds raised another way, our children would simply not have many basic services nor the super cool additions (after-school, garden, PE, enhanced art, etc.). Our school needs FOM to remain the vibrant institution that we all love.
I DON’T HAVE MUCH MONEY. HOW CAN I HELP?
In any small way you can, in any role you are interested in. Volunteering for FOM is a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Our community of kids, parents and teachers continues to grow closer every year. We are all in this together. FOM IS GROWING
We’ve made giant leaps in the number of programs we support and the amounts we are able to fundraise. Just four years ago, FOM was raising $25,000 annually. Last year, we raised over $120,000! Now, we have to raise even more, because just as our Supplemental Funds are going down, our expenses are growing.
We need everyone to pitch in – ideally $500 per family, or $42/month – so that we can keep all of the programs that make our school special. Together we can do it!
OUR 2017-18 FUNDRAISING GOAL IS $175,000
With 100% participation from all families we can reach our goal. No contribution is too small!

WHAT IS FALL PLEDGE DRIVE?
Fall Pledge Drive is our biggest fundraiser. Last year, over 50% of our annual funds were raised during this time, with a participation rate of about 40% of Micheltorena families. However, right when we need to raise more money than ever before, we must also adhere to increasingly strict LAUSD rules governing how schools can fundraise.
So now, more than ever, we need your help!
1. How do I donate?
2. Do I have to donate online?
No, you can bring your cash or check to the school office. Or you can mail a check to: Friends of Micheltorena, 1511 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles, CA 90026. Make out your check to “Friends of Micheltorena, Inc.”
3. How do I enter the raffle?
You can go here or fill out a raffle ticket in the school office. But remember – you must make a DONATION to enter the raffle!
4. Can I enter more than one kid in the raffle?
Yes, if you have more than one kid, please sign them up according to their grade (“House”) and give us each kid’s name. If your kids are in the same grade, please be sure to tell us how many you’re entering and all of their names.
5. Can I enter the raffle more than once?
Yes, you can enter the raffle once a week, as long as you donate at least $1 each time.
6. So I only have to donate $1 to enter the raffle?
Yes, but if you can afford it, please donate more! Our school is struggling to manage serious budget cuts. If you value our programs and want to support them, please donate as much as you can.
7. How much should I donate?
We encourage you to donate $500 per family, or $42/month. And if you’re a Kinder parent, we ask you to donate the equivalent of one month of pre-school tuition. Think of it as an investment in our school, where your child will be enjoying all of our wonderful programs for many years to come!
8. Should I ask my company to make matching donations?
Yes, if they do this, please ask! Have them make out their check to “Friends of Micheltorena, In” and use our tax ID number below. Friends of Micheltorena operates as a tax-exempt, non-profit 501(c)(3).

10. Why does this website say our school’s name is Michelwarts?
In order to keep the “fun” in fundraising, we decided to make this year’s Fall Pledge Drive theme “Harry Potter.” Michelwarts is a play on the name of Harry Potter’s school: Hogwarts.
11. I keep hearing about Houses. What are you talking about?
Every grade in school is sorted into a different house, again like in Harry Potter. (Think Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, etc.) Houses compete against each other for points. To earn points — and enter your name in our raffle — you must make a donation. The house with the most points wins the Cup. And one lucky witch or wizard from the winning house wins our grand prize: 4 passes to Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter! We will announce the winners at our Quidditch World Cup (aka Pumpkin Fest) on Saturday, October 28.
12. I don’t get all these Harry Potter references. Please help!

13. Are the books / movies safe for my child to read / watch?
This really depends on your child. The later books / movies are definitely scarier. We recommend using this site to determine if they are right for your child.
