FRIENDS OF MICHELTORENA IS HERE TO HELP
Friends of Micheltorena (FOM) is the volunteer, non-profit fundraising entity for Micheltorena Elementary School. FOM is comprised of parents, teachers and members of the local community. Ideally, every family is an active member of FOM, gets involved, and donates.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I DONATE?
Give what you can. We need everyone to pitch in – and because our families are so economically diverse – we’re asking everyone to donate on a sliding scale. Keep in mind that 56% of our school is Title One, which means these families qualify for free or reduced lunches. So we’re asking our families at the other end of the economic spectrum to donate more, if you can.

Less than $50k/year, donate $120 — or $10/month
$50 – 100k/year, donate $350 — or $30/month
$100 – 150k/year, donate $900 — or $75/month
$150 – 200k/year, donate $1500 — or $125/month
More than $200k/year, donate $3000 — or $250/month
As always, we ask our Kinder families to donate the equivalent of one month’s preschool tuition. But please consider all of these numbers suggestions. Donate what you can.

WHY DO WE NEED FOM?
Public education is seriously underfunded in California. We are 46th in the nation in what we spend per student. Then, on top of that, our federal funding keeps going down. Because of these budget cuts, our school is not able to offer as many programs and resources as we’d like. In the past ten years, our Federal Funds have gone down 80% – from $481,000 to $100,000. These funds are meant to cover basic expenses. Our school wants more than that. That’s where FOM comes in. Without FOM, Micheltorena wouldn’t have all the great features that make our school special.
WHAT DOES FOM SUPPORT?
Because of FOM’s fundraising and volunteer efforts, our students can have:
- arts programs (music/orchestra, visual, theater, dance)
- P.E. (partnering with Prime Time Sports) and new equipment
- Teacher Assistants
- an Assistant Principal
- Readers/Writers workshop
- a School Psychologist one extra day per week
- after school enrichment classes
- bus rides to go on field trips
- an Amity Institute intern
- a “Wonder of Reading” Library with new library books
- a Community Garden
- a California Native Plant & Butterfly Garden
- additional computers in the computer lab
- educational materials and books for the Dual Language Program
- additional teachers supplies
- educational software
- Parenting workshops
- professional development for teachers (like Responsive Classroom)
- a playground set in the lower yard
- campus beautification (murals, Peace Path, greening, vines, trees, labyrinth, etc!)
- community events (Kindergarten Orientation Social, Movie Nights, Pumpkin Festival and Día de la Familia
However, all of these things cost money! Which means we need your help.
HOW DOES FOM RAISE MONEY?
Every year, FOM hosts events to raise money for our school, including: Fall Pledge Drive, March-a-Thon, and Spring Auction. We have also successfully raised money through grants. (For example, we have a Wonder of Reading library and a California Native Plant & Butterfly Garden, thanks to the parents who wrote grants for them.)

WHAT IS THE FOMO CARD?
This year, we are introducing our brand new FOMO card, as part of our initiative to SHOP LOCAL, SUPPORT LOCAL. When you donate $100 (or more, hopefully MUCH MORE!) to our lovely school, you get a FOMO perks card and all of the generous benefits that our participating local businesses offer! WHAT IS FOM’S BUDGET?
We’ve made giant leaps in the number of programs we support and the amounts we are able to fundraise. Just a few years ago, FOM was raising $25,000 annually. Last year, we raised over $193,000!
Now, we have to raise even more, because just as our Federal Funds are going down, our expenses are growing. Our 2018 fundraising goal is now $225,000. Which is why we ask everyone to donate here.
WHAT IS OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL? ($225K!)
With 100% participation from all families, we can reach our 2018-19 fundraising goal of $225,000. No donation is too small!

WHAT IS OUR FALL PLEDGE DRIVE GOAL? ($150K!)
Fall Pledge Drive is our biggest fundraiser. Last year, about 50% of our annual funds were raised during this time. However, right when we need to raise more money than ever before, we must also adhere to increasingly strict LAUSD rules governing how schools can fundraise. So now, more than ever, we need your help!

WHO DECIDES HOW MONEY IS SPENT?
YOU do! Every parent or family member at Micheltorena is automatically a member of FOM, which means you can come to any meeting and vote. FOM meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:15pm in our Parent Center. (For exact dates, please consult our school calendar.) Membership is free and open. FOM provides free pizza and childcare during these meetings. Be part of the decision making process by coming to meetings, joining the discussion, and voting. DOES FOM’S FUNDRAISING JEOPARDIZE THE SCHOOL’S TITLE 1 STATUS?
Absolutely not. FOM helps augment funds now missing from our school’s State and Federal budgets. FOM’s efforts are independent of those monies and serve to make up for funds that are lacking. Without FOM or funds raised another way, our children would simply not have many basic services nor the super cool additions (after-school enrichment, gardens, PE, art, etc.). Our school needs FOM to remain the vibrant institution that we all love.
I DON’T HAVE MUCH MONEY. HOW CAN I HELP?
In any small way you can, in any role you are interested in. Volunteering for FOM is a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Our community of kids, parents and teachers continues to grow closer every year. We are all in this together. No, you can bring your cash or check to the school office. Or you can mail a check to: Friends of Micheltorena, 1511 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles, CA 90026. Make out your check to “Friends of Micheltorena, Inc.”

Who’s on the list? Keep reading…
To get on our list each Friday, you need to donate $100 — or more, if you can please donate much MORE — before 12 noon on Thurs that week. All recurring monthly donors who donate $100 (or MORE) per year are automatically on the list.
Every week after that, throughout Fall Pledge Drive, we’ll be updating the list of eligible donors and leaving additional cards with office staff in clearly labeled envelopes for pickup every Friday.
We will also have parent volunteers in the office every Friday in the morning (from 8:30-9am) and afternoon (from 2:30-3pm) accepting last minute donations and handing out FOMO cards.
4. Is there a deadline for picking up my FOMO card?
Yes, you have until Friday, Nov. 2 to collect your card. After that, all unclaimed cards will be returned to us. If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from collecting yours on time, please email us at email@example.com.
5. What discounts can I get with the FOMO card?

6. How do I become a FOMO card business?

7. Can I get more than one FOMO card if I donate more than $100?
We are trying to limit the cards to one per family. So please consider donating more, if you’d like to get more than one card.
8. Call I still get FOMO cards after Fall Pledge Drive ends?
Yes, after Fall Pledge Drive ends, you can still get FOMO cards here.

9. When does Fall Pledge Drive end?
This year (2018), it ends on Sat. Oct. 27th, at Pumpkin Fest.
10. How do I update my recurring monthly payments in PayPal?
Unfortunately, PayPal does not allow you to edit or update payments. So you will need to login to PayPal, click on “Activity,” go to your recurring payment and cancel it. Then you will need to create a brand new one for “Friends of Micheltorena, Inc.”
11. Can I donate with Venmo?
Yes, you can make donations @payFOM. But if you have a PayPal account, we encourage you to use that instead, because Venmo caps the amount of donations we are allowed to receive each week.
12. Can I donate using my credit card?
Yes, our parent volunteers have Square/Point of Sale apps on our phones that will accept credit card payments. We will be standing outside the school gates every Monday and Friday morning and afternoon, during Fall Pledge Drive, accepting donations.
13. Should I ask my company to make matching donations?
Yes, if they do this, please ask! Have them make out their check to “Friends of Micheltorena, Inc” and use our tax ID number below. Friends of Micheltorena operates as a tax-exempt, non-profit 501(c)(3).
