What is Friends of Micheltorena (FOM)?
FOM is the parent volunteer fundraising entity for Micheltorena Street Elementary School, composed of parents, teachers & community members. FOM was formed in 2007 to create and raise money for programs for our students, facilitate communication between the school and parents, and to deepen our school’s relationship with its community. In 2017, Friends of Micheltorena incorporated as a tax-exempt non-profit 501(c)(3) group. We use the tax ID# 81-4428143 for our tax exempt status.
We meet at the Parent Center on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:15pm, with free childcare and pizza provided to attending Micheltorena families. (If meeting date falls during a school vacation, we will meet on a subsequent Wednesday. Please check the calendar on our home page.)
2017-2018 FOM Officers:
Co-Beautification Chairs: Rachel Slowinski and Susan Kucera, email@example.com
Note: We still have the following Co-chair positions open: Secretary, Treasurer, Communications, Fundraising, and Community Events, . Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or attend one of our monthly Board meetings to get involved.

FOM’s Cupcake Extravaganza aka General Meeting Thurs 2/23/17 We had a GREAT turnout! Thank you to everyone who came. Special shout out to the mom who accidentally arrived 1 hr early, but stayed for the cupcakes & community!
If you missed it, please enjoy our sugar-free notes below.
GENERAL MEETING NOTES
Thank you Parent Activists! All Micheltorena families should be proud of what we’ve achieved this year by reaching out to the District and our school board representative Dr. Ref Rodriguez. Thanks to calls, emails and visits from our parents and Principal, we reinstated our Orchestra and got a district wide moratorium on leasing fees while they re-evaluate their policies. There is a movement at our school to continue to work with the school district to support policies that help us reach our goals.
Lost Attendance Funds Micheltorena has already lost over $100,000 this year in attendance funds. No, it doesn’t matter if an absence is excused. No, we don’t want you to send sick kids to school. Just please avoid unecessary absences. If you’re planning a long trip (5 day minimum), request an Independent Study plan from your teacher 2 weeks in advance, so that our school doesn’t lose money. Or, if your absence doesn’t qualify for that, please consider donating to the school to offset lost funds. We lose $62 every day your kid misses school. (Just for comparison, FOM’s entire budget last year was $112k. So just think what our school could do with another $100k!)
School Volunteers Needed Especially in the 4-5th grade classrooms. Please contact Tiffany for more info: email@example.com
March-a-thon – Sat, March 25 from 9am-12pm It’s coming up soon! We need volunteers who enjoy healthy living, active kids, and fun! This is one of our school’s biggest fundraisers, so please keep an eye out for emails and volunteers standing outside our school in March, handing out march-a-thon sign up sheets. Please contact Tiffany for more info: firstname.lastname@example.org
Beautification Committee Rebecca, our longtime chair, is stepping down, which means we need someone to replace her. This is a great opportunity to support the gardens, murals, and anything that makes us feel pretty! Please contact her for more info: email@example.com
Grants Committee Erin is too busy as fundraising co-chair to continue writing grants, which means we need to replace her too. So far, this committee has been super successful getting grants (5 out of 6 applications were awarded). It’d be a shame to miss out on this funding opportunity, especially since we already have a huge database & templates just waiting to be used. Please contact her for more info: firstname.lastname@example.org
Communications Committee This committee is very busy and needs volunteers, especially writers. This is a great opportunity to help with our website, yearbook, newsletter, etc. We’ve received requests for things like letting parents know about school events a month in advance in our newsletter or including a photo/bio for our new principal on our website. We agree! These are great ideas. If you can help us make this happen, we’d love to hear from you. For more info, please contact Chris email@example.com or Heather at firstname.lastname@example.org
Spanish Translators Needed As you may have noticed, this is written entirely in English. If you think that’s no bueno for a diverse, Dual Language school like ours, help us fix this. Please contact Heather for more info: email@example.com
Cheap Kiln? We have 80 beautiful, handmade tiles our kids created that need to be fired, so they can decorate our school. If you know someone with an operational kiln who might want to be paid to help us fire them, or could help us figure out how to use the ancient one in our school basement, please let us know. Contact Jama for more info: firstname.lastname@example.org
FOM Funds at Work We’re on pace to raise more funds for the school than ever before, so thank you to all our volunteers and donors for your hard work and support. To see how current funds are being used, scroll down to the charts that were presented at the meeting. Each year at this time, the school prepares a budget in conjunction with the School Site Council (SSC), an elected body of parent, teacher and staff representatives who determine funding priorities. Funds from FOM are donated to the school to help implement these priorities. Both the SSC and FOM would love to know what you’d like to support in the coming year, and these meetings are open to all parents. Please attend an upcoming meeting, or send a note with your priorities to email@example.com.
Amazon Funds If you want to help us raise money, use the Amazon link on our website then bookmark it for later use. We get the money from click throughs. So it does NOT matter what charity you choose on Smile Amazon!
School Librarian There is some confusion over our current library hours and how to increase them. We are investigating this. Suggestions are welcome!
School Site Council Survey There is some confusion over the budget items included in the school’s last survey. We are looking into ways to help clear this up.
After School Program Friday, 2/24 was the last day to sign up for FOM’s free after school classes on Tuesday afternoons. Please check the newsletter for updates on the E3 classes which will start on March 15th and cost $128.
Coffee with Principal – Friday March 3 at 8:30 am City Council member Mitch O’Farrell will join us from 9:00 to 9:45am. This is a great opportunity to meet him right before the upcoming elections (on March 7th) and discuss things we care about (like supporting public education, where to find funding for things we need, like additional librarian hours, stipends for dual language teachers, etc).
FOM is Incorporating This is exciting because it means we’ll soon be our own non-profit, which will allow us to save money and allow us more flexibility.
FOM Elections Are Soon! Please consider running for a position on the FOM board. Ideally, all positions are shared between co-chairs, so no one person has to bear full responsibility. Now more than ever, public education needs our support. This is where YOU can make a difference in a truly meaningful way.
Next FOM meeting is Wed, March 1 at 6pm If you can’t get enough of our free childcare, pizza, and community building, please join us again in the Parent Center next week. Like all FOM meetings, it’s open to everyone in our school community, who wants to show up, vote, and participate.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact any of us at the email addresses listed above.
Ok if you actually read this all the way to the end – THANK YOU.
You’re awesome. You should really considering becoming a bigger part of FOM. We need more people like you!
