The AM class will be a Dual Language Spanish class using the 90/10 model, meaning 90% of the class will be conducted in Spanish, and 10% of the class in English. The PM class will be in English only.

Class times will be as follows:  AM Class 8:10a-10:45a; PM Class 11:30a-2:05p

Enrollment is going on now!  To enroll, parents need to come to the school office and fill out a registration packet.  Placement is first-come, first-served.  Please call the school at 323-661-2125 with questions!

Friends of Micheltorena Meeting, Wednesday May 1, 4:15p in the ParentCenter.  We will discuss needs for our final school fundraisers (Cinco de Mayo, Fame High Movie Night, Wine and Cheese fundraiser, see below!), and discuss the new board for next year (President, Vice President… we need some folks!), and all those other tidbits that come with the end of the year around the corner.

Micheltorena Talent Show Auditions.  Micheltorena’s Got Talent will be held on Thursday, May 23rd 5pm in the Auditorium.  Students who wish to participate need a signed parent form (sent home with students last week, also copies in the office) and AUDITION!  Auditions will be held at 2:30pm in the auditorium starting this week:  May 2, May 3, May 6 and May 7.

Coffee with the Principal, Friday May 3, 8:15am in the Parent Center.  Come chat with Principal Furfari and hob-nob with fellow parents, while sipping coffee and noshing on baked goods.

Cinco de Mayo Festival, Friday May 3, 4pm to 7pm, in the school play-yard  Please join us for Micheltorena PTA’s Annual Cinco De Mayo Festival. There will be a DJ working his magic, a Folklorico dance performance by Micheltorena students, authentic Mexican food, face painting and games!  All the money raised goes to field trips, books, and student programs.  Support your local school and have a great time!

Garden Compost Parade, Saturday May 4, 12pm to 3pm, Micheltorena Garden.  Sponsored by the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council.  Everybody loves a parade! Gather in the garden with your finest festive attire, flower, fruit & vegetable costumes, musical instruments and potluck dish for the 1st Annual “Mini” Parade!  Parents, children, and neighbors will parade from the our garden to the Silver Lake Farmer’s Market and back again, joining weekly volunteers who collect market produce overflow and bring it back for compost.  Potluck feast to follow!  Read more about this event here.

Prospective Parent Tour, Wednesday May 8, 10:30am, Parent Center.  Principal Furfari and parent volunteers give regular tours of the school.  If you know someone who would like to take a tour, they can sign up here.

Teacher Appreciation Lunch, Thursday May 9, 12pm, sponsored by the PTA  (BTW, Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6 to May 10, and Teacher Appreciation Day is May 7!)

Micheltorena Open House, Thursday, May 9, 5pm  Children and teachers will be showing off their work and giving classroom tours!

Bullying Lecture:  What Parents Need to Know About Bullying, Tuesday, May 14, 7pm Micheltorena Auditorium.  Sponsored by the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council.  Is bullying a national epidemic? This engaging presentation by Dr. Judy Chiasson will help parents learn about the complexities of bullying – who bullies, who gets bullied, and why, and most importantly, how we can help our children. Read about Dr. Judy Chiasson here.

Spring Student Concert, Thursday, May 16, 1pm in the Auditorium  Micheltorena students will sing and play their hearts out!  Don’t miss it!

Parent Volunteer Sign-up Breakfast #2, Friday, May 17, 8:30a in the Parent Center.  Come sign up to volunteer for the school at the Friends of Micheltorena’s second parent volunteer sign-up breakfast.  Lots of good jobs and events to sign up for!  Food and coffee provided!

Movie Night at Micheltorena!  Friday, May 17 6pm  FAME HIGH, the new documentary by Michel Parent Scott Kennedy, that follows teens as they attend Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA.)  This is a fundraiser event, and tickets for adults are $5.  Kids are free, and will have a kid movie and supervision provided by Friends of Micheltorena.  Popcorn and drinks will be sold as well!  Read more about FAME HIGH here.  Scott was nominated for an Academy Award for his 2008 film The Garden.

Bike Rodeo!  Saturday, May 18, 9:30a to 2pm, Micheltorena play-yard.  Sponsored by Silver Lake Neighborhood Council and LADOT, featuring LADOT’s Safe Moves Bicycle Course, for kids ages 5-12.  Safe Moves allows children to bicycle through a miniature city called “Safe Moves City”. It consists of streets, sidewalks, intersections, crosswalks, traffic signals, traffic signs, residential areas, business districts, cars, trucks, buses and a railroad track with signals, crossing gate and train. “Safe Moves City” is designed to simulate the diverse traffic environments in Los Angeles and to create “problem solving” experiences for each grade level.  PLENTY FOR PARENTS TO DO:  Bring your bicycles for safety inspections! Check out the bicycle blender! Community partners will be tabling. You do not need a bike or helmet to participate!  Flyer attached.

Micheltorena’s Got Talent!  Thursday, May 23 5pm, Auditorium.  Come cheer on our students as they sing, dance, play instruments, read poems, and get up to some seriously talented antics.

… and last but not least!  Wine and Cheese Fundraiser at Cliff’s Edge Restaurant, Saturday, June 1.  Sponsored by Friends of Micheltorena.

There are 6 Micheltorena teams and 6 Hilltop teams competing in the Bee.  All monies raised by Micheltorena teams will go towards Micheltorena activities, including the Micheltorena Garden, Dual-Language and Arts Programs!  All money raised by Hilltop teams will go towards Hilltop activities.  But the championship prize will go to only one team!

And!  This year we have Rhys Coiro, Micheltorena parent, who played Billy Walsh on the TV series Entourage, spelling for Micheltorena!  For Hilltop, we have Jessica “Sugar” Kiper, an all-star on the TV series Survivor.  We’ve also have a principal, PTA presidents, and parents getting up on stage to spell as well!  It will be a lot of fun!  Join us!!

The more pledges and money a team raises, the more “cheats” they can buy to try to win the contest!  Buy your tickets to the event here!  Help us raise money for two awesome Silver Lake schools.  

The Bee will be held at the beautiful Assistance League of Southern California Theater, the home of the Nine O’Clock Players!  Tickets are $10 and the event is adults-only.   Tickets are available for purchase online, or in the school office.  Food and a cash-bar for beer, wine and mixed drinks will be available before and during the event on the beautiful outdoor patio!

You can now donate ONLINE with your credit or debit card to Micheltorena at www.micheltorena.org/donate. All donations go towards field trips, after-school programs and school resource building.  Thanks to all our generous donors, our PTA Field Trip Fundraiser raised over $4000! We celebrated with a pizza/gelato party and dancing it all off afterward!

Save the date!  On April 27, 2013, we will have our biggest annual fundraiser event, the Micheltorena Screwball Spelling Bee. Last year we raised $25,000, proceeds which went towards starting our dual language program and supporting our extensive arts curriculum through the Micheltorena Arts Plan.  This year we plan on raising $30,000!!!  What the heck is a Screwball Spelling Bee? Only a hilarious evening of verbal wit and flagrant fakery.   More details to come soon.

PTA Field Trip Fundraiser: The Micheltorena PTA is asking for your support during our final push to raise money for field trips!  Our fundraiser ends this Friday, March 1!  We are asking all parents to donate what they can. All funds raised will go to pay for buses for our field trips.   We have raised almost $4000 so far, and our goal is to raise $6000!! We can do it!  To contribute:

Read Across America, 5pm, in the school library: Micheltorena is hosting its annual Read Across America event, where parents and children come and listen to stories, play reading games, and celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

PTA fundraiser pizza and gelato party, 6 – 7pm: After working up an appetite reading and playing games in the library, come share some pizza and gelato with the Micheltorena PTA and fellow parents and celebrate the end to our fundraiser.  Gelato donated by Pazzo Gelato!!

All funds raised will go to pay for buses for our field trips.   Our goal is to raise $6000 by the end of the month!! Parents and the PTA have already raised $2000.  We can do it!  Look for the “thermometer” in the entrance hallway that will track our progress!
