We had a whirlwind of a time this past long MLK weekend in the garden. On Saturday, January 15, Treepeople and dozens of volunteers descended on the campus to help plant fruit trees in the garden and around the school, and to take a tree home for their own garden as well. Treepeople donated 100 stone fruit trees for the school and community for the event, including plum, apricot, apple and peach trees. On Monday, January 17, Micheltorena participated in the LAUSD Green Spaces MLK Day of Service event, drawing a crowd of parents, kids, teachers and neighbors to build raised beds for the new garden, plant bulbs around the school entrance, plant seeds and divide seedlings, sweep, weed, mulch, trim bushes…whew!
Micheltorena and the garden team would like to thank everyone who came out to work and play around the garden over the past weekend, as well as give a hearty shout out to Treepeople for their inestimable teaching and support for our school orchard, to Sunset Nursery for donating bulbs, to Brooklyn Bagels on Beverly Blvd. for donating bagels, and to Cafe Tropical for donating sandwiches for our volunteers! Please visit our Garden page for information about upcoming volunteer days and garden events.
