MICHELTORENA MEDITATION GARDEN
In the Spring of 2014, the beautification committee decided to implement a meditation garden in a quiet spot on campus. A site was chosen between the Kindergarten building and the Auditorium. Volunteers made up of parents, faculty and a couple community members worked together to transform the space. After many long weekends what emerged was a beautiful colorful labyrinth. Long-term plans include more planting in the two beds, two cement benches for reflection and a giant mural on the side of the Auditorium building. If you would like to help complete the plans for this project please contact Rebecca Feldman and Lisa Cole of Friends of Micheltorena. Thank you!
ABOUT THE LABYRINTH
We all walk a sacred path in our journey through life. A labyrinth is a model of that path. It is an ancient symbol found worldwide that dates as far back as 3,500 years and relates to wholeness, centeredness, and spirituality. It has long been used as a meditation, prayer & healing tool. There is something powerful about going for a walk. Many believe the way to the soul is through the sole.
There are many designs of labyrinths found the world over. Ours is a Classical Seven Circuit labyrinth that often mirrors patterns found in nature and the human body. The cochlea of the inner ear and the fingerprint are good examples.
The true labyrinth has no false pathways or dead ends to confuse those who follow its winding course. Unlike puzzles or mazes in gardens, which are multi-cursal and have many paths to entice and fool the visitor, the labyrinth consists of a single meandering pathway, which leads from the entrance to the center.
Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life’s journey. The pathway represents passage through time, experience and the cycles of nature. Walking this path can restore balance and organize chaos.
- RELEASE: Focus and pause at the entrance. Become quiet and centered. Pose a question you may seek an answer to. Enter.
- RECEIVE: Walk purposefully and observe the process. When you reach the center, stay and focus several moments or as long as you like. Remain open to receive an answer to your question. Breathe…
- RETURN: When you feel ready, go back out the same way you came in. Be attentive and listen as you walk. If you received clarity or an answer to your question, prepare to share your new insight with the rest of the world.
Pass on the gift.
After you exit, turn and face the entrance. Give acknowledgement to the ending.
Practice gratitude. Remember, your life path has led here and you are exactly where you are supposed to be.
