Ms. Lewis’s Class Page

CST/CMA Time of Year is Upon Us!

We are down to the last few weeks of school in the 2011 – 12 school year, with state testing just around the corner, starting the week of May 7th. Ms. Slayton and I look forward to assisting with the testing process for our students with learning disabilities, in compliance with their IEPs.

The rest of the time, up until testing, and in the weeks after Micheltorena students have completed the CST, CMA, and CAPA, Ms. Slayton, Ms. Cano, and I can continue to be found in Room 30 for part of each school day, working with small groups, especially during RtI time. We work with Kinder and First grade students after recess, and then we have an amazing group of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Writers working in Room 30 for the 40-minute block before lunch.

The RSP Team also works with various additional small groups in Room 30 as well as “pushing in” to support struggling students in some of the other classrooms. If you would like to contact me regarding RtI or the Resource Specialist Program, please feel free to contact me at lkl0281@lausd.net .

A little something more about me:

I grew up in Alameda, California, and attended San Francisco State University, earning my B.A. in English Literature. I earned my Special Education, Level II Teaching Credential through the LAUSD District Intern Program, while working full time at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School. I have taught general education 4th grade as well as various levels of special education, Kindergarten through 6th grade (in self-contained classes, and as a Resource Specialist Teacher). I am a UCLA Writing Project Fellow, and have acquired both my CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) certification for teaching English Learners and my Added Autism Authorization (AAA) for  working with students impacted by Autism.

The school year 2011 – 2012 is my 4th year at Micheltorena, which is a school near and dear to my heart, as I live less than a mile away from our campus. I love seeing our students out and about in the community when I am walking my dogs on the weekends or in the evenings, or riding my bike home from school. In my spare time, I love to read, refurbish my 85-year-old house with my husband, bicycle or walk my dogs around the neighborhood, garden, knit, and (of course!) attend a lot of Dodger baseball games!  It was very moving seeing all of the MLB players wearing # 42, in honor of Jackie Robinson, on April 15th, the anniversary of Robinson’s first major league game in 1947. It was also great to see the Dodgers win on a walk-off hit, and start their 2012 season with nine wins and just one loss!
